SUSPENSION MAINTENANCE & REPAIR

Upgrading trailer spring packs can be beneficial for several reasons, especially if you're experiencing issues with your current setup or if you're looking to improve your trailer's performance. Here are some key reasons why you might consider an upgrade:

  1. Increased Load Capacity: If you're hauling heavier loads than your trailer was originally designed for, upgrading to stronger spring packs can help support the additional weight and ensure that your trailer remains stable and safe.

  2. Improved Ride Quality: New or upgraded springs can provide a smoother ride by better absorbing shocks and vibrations. This can reduce wear and tear on both the trailer and the cargo, as well as improve overall handling.

  3. Enhanced Stability: Upgrading to higher-quality or heavier-duty springs can improve the stability of your trailer, particularly when towing at higher speeds or when carrying unevenly distributed loads. This can reduce sway and enhance overall control.

  4. Better Load Distribution: New spring packs can help distribute the weight of the load more evenly across the trailer, which can reduce stress on individual components and improve overall handling and safety.

  5. Increased Durability: Over time, springs can wear out or lose their effectiveness. Upgrading to new or more durable springs can extend the lifespan of your trailer's suspension system and reduce the need for frequent repairs or replacements.

  6. Compliance with Regulations: Depending on where you are, there may be regulations or safety standards related to trailer load capacities. Upgrading your spring packs can ensure that your trailer complies with these requirements.

  7. Enhanced Towing Experience: For those who tow frequently, upgrading the spring packs can lead to a more enjoyable and less stressful towing experience. This includes better handling, reduced bouncing, and improved overall stability.

If you decide to upgrade, it's important to choose spring packs that are appropriate for your specific trailer and load requirements. Consult with our expert team to help ensure that you select the right components for your needs.

At Johnson Spring and Trailer, we highly recommend the use of Brass bushings in comparison to plastic. Brass bushings offer greater durability, strength, and performance. Although plastic bushings are more cost-effective, they are less durable and will wear out faster.

Brass Bushings:

  • Durability: More resistant to wear and tear, lasts longer.

  • Strength: Handles higher loads and stresses better.

  • Environmental Resistance: Withstands moisture, temperature extremes, and chemicals.

  • Maintenance: Longer lifespan, less frequent replacement needed.

  • Performance: Provides smoother operation and reduces friction.

Brass Bushings vs. Plastic

  • Excessive Play or Movement: If you feel significant play or wobbling in the wheel when lifted, the bearings may be worn out.

  • Noise: Grinding, squealing, or rumbling noises from the wheel area can indicate bearing failure. This noise often becomes more noticeable at higher speeds.

  • Heat: If the wheels or hubs are unusually hot to the touch after driving, it could be a sign that the bearings are failing or not properly lubricated.

  • Visual Inspection: Check for visible damage such as cracks, rust, or contamination in the bearings or hub assembly.

  • Grease Leakage: If you notice grease leaking from the wheel hub, the seals might be damaged, leading to bearing wear.

  • Abnormal Vibration: Excessive vibration felt through the vehicle can be a symptom of bearing issues, which may affect towing stability.

  • Regular Maintenance Intervals: Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for maintenance and replacement intervals, especially if the trailer is used frequently or in harsh conditions.

  • Signs of Wear: During routine maintenance, inspect the bearings for signs of wear or damage. Bearings should be replaced if they show signs of deterioration.
